Valley Green, a wooded stretch along Wissahickon Creek inside Fairmount Park, is the setting here, and the record's subject tags point to the hotels and restaurants that drew visitors there. Fairmount Park was established in the 1850s as a large public green space, and by the early 1900s the Wissahickon valley had become a popular spot for summer outings, carriage rides and meals at creekside inns. This 8 by 10 inch glass negative comes from the Detroit Publishing Company, a firm that sent photographers across the country to record scenic places and sold the views to travelers and publishers. It was made sometime between 1900 and 1915.
