Boat houses lining the Schuylkill River inside Fairmount Park show how rowing and canoeing became part of everyday leisure in Philadelphia. The park was created in the mid-1800s around the city's water works, and by the early 1900s its river banks were dotted with rowing clubs and small boathouses. This view survives as an 8 by 10 inch glass dry plate negative from the Detroit Publishing Company, a firm known for travel views of American cities and landscapes, mostly taken between 1900 and 1915. The plate later passed to the State Historical Society of Colorado and was received as a gift in 1949.
