Wissahickon Creek winds through a wooded gorge in Fairmount Park, and this view shows the road that ran alongside its banks, the Wissahickon Drive. Around 1908, the drive was a popular route for carriages and riders seeking relief from the city, and the Detroit Publishing Company, a commercial firm that sold views of American towns and scenery, recorded it on an 8 by 10 inch glass negative. The plate has a crack through its center, a typical hazard of fragile glass negatives and a reminder of how many such images were lost. The scene shows a city park valued as much for its natural quiet as for its roads.
