Wissahickon Creek winds through a deep, wooded gorge in Fairmount Park, and this 8 x 10 inch glass negative records the stream itself rather than any building or monument nearby. The Detroit Publishing Company, which operated from the 1890s into the early 1920s and was known for its color-tinted views of American places, produced the picture sometime between 1900 and 1910. Parks like Fairmount, laid out in the nineteenth century as a green refuge within a rapidly industrializing city, drew photographers and visitors eager to show the creek's rocky banks and shaded water. The negative reached the Library of Congress as part of a 1949 gift from the State Historical Society of Colorado.
