A wooded stretch of Wissahickon Creek, the stream that cuts through the rugged gorge in Fairmount Park, is the subject here, and the bridges listed in the record suggest the crossings that let visitors reach the trails on either side. The park's Wissahickon section was prized as a rural escape within a growing industrial city, drawing walkers, riders and picnickers. This glass dry plate negative was made by the Detroit Publishing Company, a firm that documented American scenery and cities in the years around 1900 and 1915. Its plate format and catalog number mark it as part of that commercial effort to show the country's places to a wide audience.
