Lily ponds and carefully arranged plantings define this view of the Japanese garden in Fairmount Park, a Philadelphia landscape set along the Schuylkill River. Japanese-style gardens grew popular in American parks after the 1876 Centennial Exhibition in Philadelphia drew wide attention to Japanese art and design. This glass negative was made by the Detroit Publishing Company, a firm known for its views of American cities, landscapes and resorts, and it dates from between 1900 and 1915, when strolling these quiet water gardens was a common leisure pastime.
