River Drive winds along the Schuylkill River through Fairmount Park, and this view stands out for its tunnels and bridges cut into the riverbank. The city began assembling the park in the 1850s, and by the early 1900s its drives drew carriages, bicycles and early automobiles out to enjoy the river scenery. The Detroit Publishing Company sent photographers across the country to record such places, and this glass plate negative, made around 1905, preserves how a Philadelphia leisure landscape looked at the turn of the century.
