The Smith Memorial Arch stands in Fairmount Park, the large municipal park along the Schuylkill River in Philadelphia, and this c1905 glass negative records it in its park setting. Memorial arches of this kind were a common way for turn-of-the-century American cities to honor soldiers and public figures, and the catalog's Civil War subject heading ties the structure to that memorial tradition. The picture comes from the Detroit Publishing Company, whose photographers traveled widely around 1900 to 1910 documenting American landmarks and scenery. The negative's cracked and broken upper left corner is visible in the original plate, a reminder of how fragile these early glass negatives were.
