Fairmount Park's Grant monument commemorates Ulysses S. Grant, the Union general who led the Northern armies to victory in the Civil War and later served two terms as the 18th president. The statue stands in one of the largest urban parks in the country, a landscape of woods, drives, and monuments that grew out of the 1876 Centennial Exposition. This glass dry plate negative comes from the Detroit Publishing Company, a firm known for documenting American cities and landmarks in the decades around 1900. Its 8 by 10 inch format gave the company's photographers sharp detail for making prints of civic sculpture.
