The William Cramp & Sons yard was one of the largest shipbuilders on the Delaware River in Philadelphia, and this view shows its wharves and working waterfront. The Detroit Publishing Company recorded the scene on an 8 by 10 inch glass plate negative, and its date of about 1905 is estimated from the company's own 1906 catalog. Cramp's built both merchant steamers and warships over several decades, so images like this document an industry that shaped the city's economy and its role in American shipping.
