Few pictures in this set pair a modern commercial landmark with a national shrine as directly as this one does. The Curtis Publishing Company Building, home of *The Saturday Evening Post* and *Ladies' Home Journal*, rose in Philadelphia's Old City near Independence Hall, the site of the Declaration of Independence and the Constitutional Convention. The contrast between the era's office architecture and the colonial-era statehouse says a good deal about the city at the turn of the twentieth century. The Detroit Publishing Company made this glass negative, which the Library of Congress holds, as part of its broad record of American towns and landmarks.
