The Liberty Bell hangs in the tower of Independence Hall, and this print shows the bell itself as the centerpiece of the scene rather than the building around it. The bell was cast in London in 1752 for the Pennsylvania State House, the building now known as Independence Hall, and it cracked soon after arriving in Philadelphia. Its enduring place in American memory came later, when it became a symbol of independence and was rung for the Declaration of Independence in 1776. This halftone reproduces a color photoprint, so the image likely dates from a later period when such reproductions were common.
