Independence Hall, the brick Georgian building where the Declaration of Independence was debated and adopted in 1776, anchors this view from the open square to its south. The Detroit Publishing Company, which produced thousands of views of American cities and landmarks for travelers and postcard buyers, made this glass-plate negative in the years between 1895 and 1910, when the hall was already treated as a national shrine. The wide, empty plaza in the foreground shows how the building was framed and approached before the surrounding streets filled with later traffic and development.
