The Liberty Bell hangs in the tower of Independence Hall, and this glass negative captures the bell in its historic interior setting in Philadelphia. The bell is best known for its cracked surface and its association with the Declaration of Independence, which was adopted in the building in 1776. Made by the Detroit Publishing Company in the early twentieth century, the photograph reflects the company's wide survey of American landmarks, when the bell had already become a national symbol. Its 8 by 10 inch glass plate was donated to the Library of Congress in 1949 by the State Historical Society of Colorado.
