The Liberty Bell, shown here on a stereograph card from about 1899, hung in the tower of Independence Hall in Philadelphia, where its famous crack made it a symbol long before its nickname caught on. The bell was cast in London in 1752 and recast in Philadelphia after it cracked during its first testing. The card was copyrighted by B.L. Singley and issued by the Keystone View Company, one of the largest publishers of stereo views in the late 1800s. Viewed through a stereoscope, the pair of images gave the bell and the old State House a convincing sense of depth.
