Mayor William S. Stokley raises an old colonial flag in front of Independence Hall on Chestnut Street, marking the opening of the centennial year. Harry Ogden's sketches were turned into this wood engraving for the January 22, 1876, issue of *Frank Leslie's Illustrated Newspaper*, a few months before the Centennial Exhibition opened in Fairmount Park. The ceremony reflected Philadelphia's effort to present its Revolutionary-era landmark to a national audience marking 100 years since the Declaration of Independence. The caption card also lists fireworks, which suggests the celebration continued into the evening.
