Few buildings in the Birch series carry as much national history as Congress Hall, shown here beside the New theater on Chestnut Street. Philadelphia served as the federal capital in the 1790s, and Congress met in this building until the government moved to Washington in 1800, the same year this view was published. The engraving is by William Birch and Son, the father-and-son team who issued a set of views of the city, and the hand coloring was added by hand after printing. Its pairing of a seat of government with a fashionable theater shows how the street mixed public affairs and entertainment.
