Few hotels in nineteenth-century Philadelphia sat as close to the center of city life as the Continental, which stood at the corner of Chestnut and Ninth streets. The record gives no date, and the shelflist card's link to the name Bufford is unverified, though that name points to a Boston lithographic firm that produced city views in the 1800s. Chestnut Street was the city's main commercial and social thoroughfare, so a hotel on this corner would have served travelers, merchants and visitors drawn by the city's business and public life. The building's street-level details and any signage are worth comparing with other views of the block.
