Few buildings in Philadelphia carry more historical weight than the State House, shown here from Chestnut Street with its brick facade and tower. It was where the Declaration of Independence was debated and adopted in 1776, and by 1800 it had become a symbol of the young nation's founding. The view comes from a plate in *The City of Philadelphia... as It Appeared in the Year 1800*, produced by the engraver William Birch and his son Thomas. Their hand-colored views were among the most detailed records of the city's streets in that period.
