Rendered from the southwest, this watercolor shows Sanderson's Franklin House, a building on Chestnut Street in Philadelphia. The artist, John Rubens Smith, was an English-born draftsman who recorded the city's buildings in the 1830s and 1840s, and his architectural views are valued for their careful detail. Chestnut Street was then the city's main commercial and social thoroughfare, lined with banks, shops, and hotels, so a view of a hostelry like this one captures the street's busy life. The work is dated to about 1844 and is part of Smith's collection at the Library of Congress.
