Few views in William Birch's 1800 series of Philadelphia engravings show a building still under construction, which makes this plate of an unfinished house on Chestnut Street stand out. Birch and his son Thomas published the set as a record of the city at the turn of the century, and this print was hand-colored after engraving. Chestnut Street was one of Philadelphia's main thoroughfares, and the bare framing of the house offers a glimpse of the building work that accompanied the city's growth in those years.
