Shown from Chestnut Street, the State House was already one of Philadelphia's most recognizable buildings by 1800. It was the place where the Declaration of Independence was adopted in 1776 and where the U.S. Constitution was drafted in 1787. William Birch & Son issued this view as Plate 21 of their 1800 series on the city, and this impression has been hand-colored, a finishing touch common to such engravings. The record notes some deterioration around the image, so the margins may show wear.
