Unlike the city views on this board, this engraving shows a single house: a residence intended for the President of the United States on Ninth Street. Philadelphia was the seat of the federal government from 1790 until Congress moved to Washington in 1800, so the house was planned for a period when the presidency was based in the city. William Birch & Son issued the plate as number 13 in their 1800 series of engraved views, *The City of Philadelphia... as It Appeared in the Year 1800*. The hand coloring adds a record of how the street and its buildings looked at the turn of the century.
