The building at the center of this print is the Art Gallery, the stone Memorial Hall that stood in Fairmount Park for the Centennial Exhibition of 1876 in Philadelphia. The fair opened that May to mark a century since the Declaration of Independence, and its art galleries drew large crowds to see American and European paintings and sculpture. New York firm Currier & Ives, known for popular lithographs of American subjects, issued this hand-colored view so buyers far from Philadelphia could see the grounds. The print's color work was applied by hand, a common finish for the firm's lithographs of the period.
