The Centennial Exhibition of 1876 filled Fairmount Park along the Schuylkill River, and this aerial view captures the sprawl of its grounds from above. The fair marked the 100th anniversary of American independence and drew roughly 10 million visitors over its six months, making it the largest world's fair held in the United States up to that time. Look for the massive Main Exhibition Building in the center, the cluster of pavilions and gardens around it, and the tree-lined paths that connected the state and foreign exhibits. The view offers a rare sense of how carefully the planners laid out a temporary city within the park.
