The Centennial International Exhibition of 1876 filled Philadelphia's Fairmount Park with a sprawl of pavilions, and this aerial view lets you take in the whole layout at once. Shot from an elevated vantage point, it shows the great exhibition halls, the grounds laid out between them, and the crowds that came to see the nation's hundredth birthday celebrated with new machines, inventions and goods from around the world. Worth noticing is how the fairgrounds were planned as a city of their own, with long promenades and separate buildings for each category of display. The fair drew millions of visitors over its six months, and its scale still makes this view a striking record of the era.
