The Shoe and Leather Building was one of the many temporary halls raised for the Centennial International Exhibition of 1876 in Philadelphia's Fairmount Park, the first official world's fair held in the United States. Exhibitors filled such buildings with machinery, finished goods and displays showing how hides became shoes, belts and harness, reflecting the country's growing manufacturing strength a century after independence. Fairs like this drew millions of visitors over their run, and the halls' exhibits offered a snapshot of industrial技术 and commerce that was rapidly changing American life.
