The Centennial International Exhibition of 1876 filled Philadelphia's Fairmount Park with pavilions, gardens and machinery halls, and this view takes in the grounds as a whole rather than a single building. The fair marked the hundredth anniversary of the Declaration of Independence and was the first official world's fair held in the United States. Visitors crossed the grounds on foot or by rail to see exhibits from dozens of nations, including the Corliss steam engine that powered the Machinery Hall. The scene shows how the exhibition was laid out as a planned landscape of buildings set among trees and walkways.
