Few places in 1876 were more crowded than the grounds of the Centennial International Exhibition, which opened in Fairmount Park that May to mark the nation's hundredth birthday. An elevated view like this one lays out the sprawling complex of exhibition halls, galleries and pavilions as a single plan, showing how the sites were arranged along the park's open lawns. The fair drew roughly 10 million visitors over its six-month run, and it introduced many Americans to new machinery, art and foreign goods. Bird's-eye views of this kind were a popular way to record such events, and today the surviving buildings, including Memorial Hall, still stand in the park.
