Few places in 1876 were busier than the grounds laid out across Fairmount Park for the Centennial Exposition, and this bird's-eye view shows the cluster of buildings as an observer hovering high above would have seen them. The Main Building, then among the largest enclosed structures in the world, stretches across the scene with its long roofs and central tower rising above smaller pavilions. The fair marked the nation's hundredth anniversary and drew roughly ten million visitors over its six months, so views like this one gave people who never made the trip a sense of how the exhibition was arranged.
