Few buildings in Philadelphia carried more meaning in 1876 than Independence Hall, shown here illuminated on July 4, the centennial of the Declaration of Independence. The wood engraving was made from a drawing by Schell and Hogan and appeared in *Harper's Weekly* on July 22, 1876, a popular illustrated newspaper that brought scenes from the International Centennial Exhibition to readers across the country.
