The poster's text sets a contrast at the center of its message: "Three millions of colonists on a strip by the sea" against "forty millions of freemen ruling from ocean to ocean." It marks the nation's 1876 centennial in Philadelphia, the city where the Declaration of Independence was signed, and it promotes the Centennial Exhibition that opened that spring in Fairmount Park. The exhibition drew millions of visitors and celebrated American industry and westward growth. Color woodcut posters like this one were a common way to advertise such events in the 1870s, and this example is notable for linking the nation's origins with its continental expansion.
