Printed in 1876, the centennial year, this Currier & Ives lithograph imagines the State House bell sounding from Independence Hall in Philadelphia on July 4, 1776. The bell that hung there, later called the Liberty Bell, had arrived from London in 1752 and cracked during its first test. Its inscription, taken from Leviticus, calls for liberty to be proclaimed throughout the land. Publishers such as Currier & Ives produced many patriotic scenes like this for American homes during the centennial, turning a revolutionary moment into a lasting national symbol.
