Rather than a single scene, this lithograph gathers portraits of the men who signed the Declaration of Independence, each paired with his autograph, so the sheet works as both a likeness collection and a set of handwriting samples. Thomas Hunter, a Philadelphia lithographer, produced it around 1833, when lithography was becoming a popular and affordable way to print images in America and interest in the Revolutionary generation was high. The title points to the signing on July 4, 1776, though most delegates actually added their names over the following weeks and months. The record also notes an 1874 copyright held by J. H. Hobart, Jr., which shows the image was registered decades after it was first printed.
