Ringing out liberty shows the Liberty Bell and the State House in Philadelphia on July 8, 1776, the day the Declaration of Independence was read aloud to crowds in the city. The bell's ringing that day is a long-told tradition rather than a firmly documented event, but it has become the enduring image of the moment. Printed around 1931 as an advertisement for the Pennsylvania Railroad, the poster drew on Philadelphia's history to promote travel to the city. N.C. Wyeth, a noted illustrator of American historical scenes, created the color design, which shows how railroad advertising of the period turned patriotic history into an appeal to passengers.
