The Citizens' Volunteer Hospital was one of several Philadelphia institutions that cared for Union soldiers during the Civil War, when the city's rail lines and riverfront brought large numbers of wounded men through town. This color lithograph, drawn by J. Queen and printed by the Philadelphia firm P.S. Duval & Son, shows the hospital as a civic undertaking, a view that reflects how residents framed their wartime contributions. Chromolithographs like this one were popular in the 1860s because they reached buyers who could not afford paintings, and they now serve as a record of how the city presented its medical response to the war.
