The print's title, *The Power of Music*, is the first thing to note, and its subject headings tie the scene to a family, dancing, and music. Duval & Hunter of Philadelphia made the chromolithograph after a painting by A. Dürcks, and A. & C. Kaufmann published it in New York in 1872, the year it was registered for copyright. In the 1870s, chromolithography allowed publishers to produce color genre scenes in quantity, bringing them into middle-class parlors at prices most households could manage. The Philadelphia imprint also shows the city's printing trade working alongside New York publishers.
