A woodcut label advertises Miner's shirtings, a sturdy cotton cloth sold with the assurance that its colors were warranted fast, meaning they would hold up to washing and sunlight. David S. Brown & Co. of Philadelphia issued it around 1868, when the city was one of the country's leading centers of textile manufacturing and dry goods trade. Trade labels like this were pasted to bolts or packages of cloth, and their bold lettering and woodcut design were meant to catch a shopkeeper's eye and reassure buyers about quality.
