Drawn from an elevated angle that lets the whole city spread out at once, this lithograph shows Philadelphia as it looked in the mid-1870s, just as the city was preparing to host the Centennial Exhibition of 1876. John P. Hunt & Co. published the print, and the Philadelphia firm H.J. Toudy & Co. made the lithograph, which the publisher registered for copyright. Bird's-eye views like this one were popular with residents and visitors who wanted to locate streets, rail lines and landmarks at a glance, and they now serve as detailed records of the city's layout before later growth.
