Philadelphia in 1872 was looking ahead to the nation's centennial, and civic leaders were already planning an exhibition in Fairmount Park for 1876. Shoppers crowded the cast-iron and brick storefronts of Chestnut and Market streets, where merchants sold dry goods, hardware and clothing. Horsecar lines and the rail routes of the Pennsylvania and Reading companies carried workers from rowhouse neighborhoods to mills and offices across the city, while construction was just beginning on a new City Hall at Penn Square. Residents still regarded Independence Hall as the city's symbolic center, and the approaching anniversary gave them reason to look hard at the streets and buildings the map records.

NotesAn original bird's-eye view map of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, drawn in 1872. Bird's-eye view maps were drawn by travelling artists who walked a town street by street, sketching every building from an imagined vantage point in the air, then sold the finished lithograph door to door by subscription. Roughly five thousand American towns were recorded this way between the 1860s and the 1920s, and for many of them the panoramic map is the most complete picture of the place that survives.
