Charles Albert "Chief" Bender, the Philadelphia Athletics pitcher, sits facing the camera in this three-quarter length portrait, a formal seated pose for one of the era's most respected arms. Bender, of Ojibwe descent, had attended the Carlisle Indian Industrial School before joining Connie Mack's Athletics in 1903, and he went on to win several World Series games for the club in the 1910s. The photograph comes from the George Grantham Bain Collection, a news picture archive, and its 1909 date was assigned by baseball researchers at the Society for American Baseball Research.
