Charles "Red" Dooin is the subject here, a catcher photographed in his Philadelphia National League uniform, which sets this portrait apart from the city's many ballpark views. Dooin caught for the Phillies for most of the 1900s and into the early 1910s, and he was known for his fiery temper and his skill at handling pitchers. The glass negative comes from the George Grantham Bain Collection, whose news photographers documented sports and public life in New York and beyond in the years before the First World War. Its 1913 date is based on later research by baseball historians, so it offers a useful snapshot of the era's player portraiture.
