Two Philadelphia Phillies pitchers, Eppa Rixey on the left and Erskine Mayer on the right, stand together at the Polo Grounds in New York, the home ballpark of the New York Giants. Rixey, a left-hander, went on to a long career and was later elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame. The picture is a glass negative from the Bain News Service, a New York agency that sold news and sports photographs to newspapers in the early 1900s. Its date of about 1913 comes from later research by baseball historians, so it offers a useful glimpse of the players' uniforms and the setting of a pre-World War I ballpark.
