Made on a 5 x 7 inch glass negative, this picture shows Dan Howley of the Philadelphia National League club at the Polo Grounds in New York, the Giants' home park. The Bain News Service, a commercial photo agency that sold news pictures to newspapers, wrote the name on its caption card as "Hawley," while later researchers settled on Howley. The Polo Grounds setting suggests the photograph was taken during a visit by the Philadelphia club to New York in 1913. The George Grantham Bain Collection at the Library of Congress holds many negatives like this one.
