Hans Lobert, a Philadelphia National League player, is pictured at the Polo Grounds in New York, the Giants' home park and a regular stop on the Phillies' schedule. The Bain News Service, a wire-photo agency that supplied newspapers with images of the day's news and sports, made the glass negative, and the Library of Congress holds it in the George Grantham Bain Collection. The date of about 1912 comes from later research by the Society for American Baseball Research. Lobert was known as a fast, aggressive baserunner, and portraits like this one from the early 1910s show how ballplayers were presented to a public that followed the game closely in newspapers.
