Here the Philadelphia catcher Bill Killefer appears at the Polo Grounds, the Manhattan ballpark where the New York Giants played and where visiting National League teams also took the field. The original caption spells his name "Killifer," a variant worth knowing when searching older newspaper and archive entries. The Bain News Service, a New York agency that sold news photographs to papers across the country, made the glass negative around 1912, when baseball photography was becoming a staple of sports pages. The picture offers a straightforward view of a working player from the deadball era.
