George Chalmers was a pitcher for the Philadelphia National League club, and this glass negative captures him at the Polo Grounds in New York, the big ballpark that the Giants shared with the Philadelphia team's rivals on the road. Chalmers pitched for the Phillies in the early 1910s, a stretch when the club was usually near the bottom of the standings. The picture comes from the George Grantham Bain Collection, a news photo archive built on fast-moving pictures for newspapers, so it reflects the working press shots of the period. Its date of 1912 comes from later research by baseball historians rather than from the original caption.
