This glass negative shows Eddie Murphy, the Philadelphia Athletics outfielder, at the Polo Grounds in New York. The Bain News Service caption card identifies him only as "E. Murphy, Phila.," and the 1913 date comes from later research by the Society for American Baseball Research. Murphy was one of the fast, hard-running outfielders of the Athletics' dead-ball era, and that year the Athletics met the New York Giants in the World Series, a matchup played in part at the Giants' home ballpark. Bain's news photographers worked in New York and pictured players from visiting teams as well as local stars.
