Red Dooin, the Philadelphia Phillies catcher whose red hair gave him his nickname, is the subject of this glass-plate portrait, which dates to about 1911. The caption on the negative spells his name "Doolin?" with a question mark, a sign that the Bain News Service was unsure of the spelling, and the title was later confirmed by baseball researchers at the Society for American Baseball Research. Dooin caught for the Phillies for well over a decade in the National League's early twentieth century, when the catcher's job meant heavy equipment and little padding. Bain News Service, a New York photo agency, supplied newspapers with pictures like this one, so the plate offers a quick look at how working ballplayers were presented to the public.
