Roger E. Salmon appears here as a pitcher for the Philadelphia Athletics of the American League, the club managed by Connie Mack. The picture comes from the Bain News Service, a New York agency that supplied newspapers with photographs of sports figures, politicians and public events in the early 1900s. The glass negative is dated to about 1912, and the Society for American Baseball Research's Pictorial History Committee helped confirm its title and date. Pictures like this one show how ballplayers were presented to newspaper readers before sports photography became routine.
